* The word gold derives from the Old English word 'gelo,' meaning yellow.

* Gold’s chemical symbol, Au, derives from Aurora, meaning “dawn.”

* If all the gold sitting in the oceans and seas were mined, every person on this planet would receive about 20 kilograms of gold each.

* According to a 2002 study by consultants Beacon Advisers, known resources associated with current mines were around 1,227 million oz or just over 38,000 tonnes. If all of this could be extracted economically this would amount to around 15 years’ production at current production rates. In practice, the amount of known resources remains fairly constant over time, since the results of new exploration finds replace those resources previously exploited.

* Gold is one of the heaviest known metals – one cubic foot of gold weighs 1,206 pounds (almost 550 kilograms), or more than half an Imperial ton, which may explain the absence of large armed robberies of gold through history.

* Twenty-four-carat gold is not pure gold since there is a small amount of copper in it. 100% pure gold is so soft that it can be molded with the hands.

* Gold is the first, and most frequently mentioned metal in the Bible, as at Genesis 2:11. A number of Old Testament Hebrew terms refer to gold, such as zahav, charuts, kethem, paz, seghor, and ophir. In the New Testament, the Greek words khrysos and khrysion are used as reference to ornaments, coins, and gold in general.

* Solomon's Temple used gold extensively in its décor. As is done with several modern coins, even ancient Israel evidently mixed an alloy with gold to harden it. (I Kings10:16). David set aside 100,000 talents (1 talent equals about 75 pounds) of gold for Solomon's Temple. By today's prices, the gold in Solomon's Temple would probably be valued at $50 billion.

* The world's holdings accumulated during all recorded history to the present is only about 120,000 metric tons. The total world's hoard of the shiny metal will occupy a single cube 60 feet by 60 feet by 60 feet - equivalent to the approximate volume of three 12-room homes. In fact the total world's holdings of the rare metal could be transported by a single solitary oil tanker.

* Gold has always been recycled because of its inherent high value, ever since it was first discovered before the Bronze Age. So modern jewelry or dental crowns may contain some gold that was mined in prehistoric times and formed part of a valued gold artifact or jewelry belonging to royalty or other high placed official in ancient civilizations. Today, at least 15% of annual gold consumption is recycled each year.
